The Global Classroom 2017 in Thailand

The Global Classroom 2017 entitled “Securitisation and the Impact on Human Rights and Democracy: Human Security in a time of Insecurity” was organized between 22-26 May, 2017 at the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol Unviersity. This is the first time that Global Classroom is taken place outside Venice and it is a privilege for Mahidol University to host this special event.

This conference gathered academics, experts and students from the seven Regional Master’s programmes in the Global Campus network of Western Europe, South East Europe, Caucasus, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, Africa, and the Asia Pacific, to discuss securitisation and the impact on human rights and democracy. The areas of concern for are broad including criminalizing immigrants, children, drug-users, minorities including indigenous people.

The event also included field trip to Mahachai seaport. During the visit, participants met and discussed with the organisations working on migrant workers’ rights and counter-trafficking, and also visited community organisations working on supporting migrant workers’ families.

The conference was concluded on 26 May, 2017 with a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT), which highlighted the regional and global trends of securitization, demonstrating common trends, and regional particularities.
